PPR/VP Header

[edit]

Picture peer review is a staging area for potential Featured Picture Candidates (FPCs) and a place where you can have images evaluated as a Valued Picture Candidate (VPC).

You may elect to have your nomination undergo Peer Review as a "spot check" before making a formal FPC nomination, have it evaluated for Valued Picture status, or receive both Peer Review and Valued Picture evaluation.

Picture Peer Review (PPR)

[edit]

You may elect to have your nomination reviewed as a potential Wikipedia:Featured Picture, or simply seek opinions on it. You can do this as well as, or instead of, having it evaluated for VP status.

Note: "peer review" usually implies a group of authoritative reviewers who are equally familiar with and expert in the subject. The process represented by this page is not a formal academic peer review in that sense. Images that undergo this process cannot be assumed to have greater authority at FPC than any other.

Valued Picture Candidates (VPC)

[edit]

Valued Pictures are images that add significant value to Wikipedia articles, either by illustrating article content particularly well, or by being a hard to obtain free use image of the content being illustrated. They may possess many of the characteristics of a Featured Picture, but have a greater emphasis on high encyclopaedic value over technical quality. For the criteria against which VPs are judged refer to the Valued Picture Criteria.

For promotion, if an image is listed here for at least seven days with three or more opinions in support (excluding the nominator) it can be added to the Wikipedia:Valued pictures gallery. Note that promotion is ultimately at the discretion of the closer. For example anonymous votes are generally disregarded, as are opinions of sockpuppets.

Instructions

[edit]

Please ensure you have read and understood the VP Criteria and/or FP criteria prior to nominating. For general advice on editing pictures see Wikipedia:How to improve image quality.

To create a Picture Peer Review and/or Valued Picture Candidate nomination, follow these three steps:

Step 1: Create a new subpage named   Wikipedia:Picture peer review/ExampleName replacing ExampleName with an appropriate title:

Step 2: Fill in the requested data, including your reasons for nominating, and click Save page.

Step 3: Transclude the newly created subpage to the TOP of the Picture peer review list (direct link).

How to comment

[edit]
If the image is nominated for Picture Peer Review only
  • Place comments addressing FPC criteria or suggesting improvements and opinions in the Peer Review Comments section of the nomination only.
  • Do not place anything in the Valued Picture Candidate Opinions section on images nominated for PPR only.

If the image is nominated for Valued Picture Candidate only
  • If you approve of a picture, write Support followed by your reasons in the Valued Picture Candidate Opinions section.
  • Unlike processes such as FPC, there are no Oppose votes at VPC; any Oppose votes will be removed. You may however be able to provide a comment in the Peer Review Comments section if you disapprove, or wish to suggest improvements.
  • There are no delist nominations at VPC. However, at times a nominator may suggest an image that they feel should replace a current VP in order to avoid duplication, e.g., a similar image of higher quality or better composition. In that case they will make a nomination, but be clear that they are proposing a replacement for an existing VP. In this case opinions should start with Replace rather than Support, followed by the reasons.
  • Note: to change your opinion, strike it out (with <s>...</s>) rather than removing it.

If the image is nominated for both PPR and VPC
  • Provide PPR comments in the Peer Review Comments section as described above.
  • Provide VPC votes in Valued Picture Candidate Opinions section as described above.

The PPR archive contains all opinions and comments collected on this page, and also nomination results.

Please remember to be civil, not to bite the newbies and to comment on the image, not the person.

This is a quality capture of the Melbourne Docklands region bathed in beautiful winter sunshine. I think it has a good chance at FPC. Some further opinions or input would be welcome.

Original: A flower of Alpine Saxifrage (Saxifraga nivalis) observed on a cliff near Upernavik, North-West Greenland.
Reason
The Saxifrage family is known as being specially adept at surviving in cracks of cliffs. The particular species shown here is furthermore specially adept at coping with a medium to high arctic oceanic environment. A plant, which exists despite all odds. The flowers are very small and you barely notice them in passing. I estimate the diameter of the flower on the photo was about 6mm. The flower is not yet fully developed. There are no other contributions of this species on Commons except this image of mine of the whole plant.

Valued Picture Criteria

[edit]

The criteria for Valued Picture Candidates are based on those for Wikipedia:Featured picture candidates; for the specific criteria against which FPCs are judged, see Wikipedia:Featured picture criteria.

The key difference is that Valued Pictures place primary emphasis on the picture's encyclopaedic value to Wikipedia. Thus standards for this are higher at VP (e.g., the image must have been in its article for at least one month, and it must be a significant addition to its article). By contrast Featured Pictures place higher emphasis on 'technical quality'.

Note: an image cannot be both a VP and an FP. Therefore you cannot nominate an existing FP at VPC. You may nominate existing VPs at FPC, but if a VP is promoted to FP, it will have its VP tag replaced with the FP tag, and will be removed from the VP Gallery.

The criteria for VPCs are:

  1. The image is encyclopaedically valuable to Wikipedia and has been suitably illustrating an article for at least one month. Images that only make a minor contribution, such as a gallery image, would not be considered to have high encyclopaedic value.
  2. The image is accurate and has an appropriate caption in its article.
  3. The image is of a suitable size for its purpose. In general this means it should have acceptable resolution at image page size.
  4. The image is of acceptable technical quality, without excessive digital manipulation. Technical quality covers such things as composition, lighting, colour balance, and sharpness. In general the image should have acceptable quality at image page size.
  5. The image has a free license.

Note: to view an image at image page size, click on the thumbnail version displayed in the nomination on this page.

Closing Procedure

[edit]

For PPR nominations

[edit]
  1. Move the nomination entry to the top of the Wikipedia:Picture peer review/Archives for the current period. This is done by simply moving the line {{Wikipedia:Picture peer review/Image name}} from this page to the top of the currnet archive.

For VP nominations

[edit]
When NOT promoted, perform the following
  1. Place the following text at the bottom of the WP:PPR/subpage:
    • {{VPCresult|Not promoted| }} --~~~~ [[Category:Ended valued picture nominations]]
    • Do NOT put any other information inside the VPCresult template. It should be copied and pasted exactly.
  2. Move the nomination entry to the top of the Wikipedia:Picture peer review/Archives for the current period. This is done by simply moving the line {{Wikipedia:Picture peer review/Image name}} from this page to the top of the currnet archive.
When promoted, perform the following
  1. Place the following text at the bottom of the WP:FPC/subpage:
    {{VPCresult|Promoted|Image:FILENAME.JPG}} --~~~~ [[Category:Ended valued picture nominations]]
    • Replace FILENAME.JPG with the name of the file that was promoted. It should show up as:
    Promoted Image:FILENAME.JPG --Username
    • Do NOT put any other information inside the VPCresult template. It should be copied and pasted exactly.
  2. Move the nomination entry to the top of the Wikipedia:Picture peer review/Archives for the current period. This is done by simply moving the line {{Wikipedia:Picture peer review/Image name}} from this page to the top of the archive.
  3. Add the image to the Valued Pictures Gallery - newest on top
  4. Update the picture's tag by adding {{ValuedPicture|image_name}} (replace image_name with the nomination page name, i.e., the image_name from Wikipedia:Picture_peer_review/image_name).
  5. If an edited or alternative version of the originally nominated image is promoted, make sure that all articles contain the Valued Picture version.
  6. Notify the nominator by placing {{subst:PromotedNominationVPC|Image:Image.ext}} on the nominator's talkpage. For example: {{subst:PromotedNominationVPC|Image:Blue morpho butterfly.jpg}}
  7. If the image was created by a Wikipedian, place {{subst:PromotedCreatorVPC|Image:Image.ext}} on the creator's talkpage. For example: {{subst:PromotedCreatorVPC|Image:Blue morpho butterfly.jpg}}

[edit]

This page would be set up similar to Wikipedia:Featured pictures thumbs; a rough example is shown below. Image would be grouped into galleries of 100.

There are currently 0 Valued Pictures.

For the criteria against which VPs are judged refer to the Valued Picture Criteria. If you wish to nominate an image for Valued Picture status, please do so at Wikipedia:Valued Picture Candidates. Images can only be added to this page following a successful Valued pictures review.

The category Wikipedia valued pictures shows the thumbnails listed alphabetically.
